Thank you for your reply Maddy!
Indeed Beertje is pretty and that for her age of almost 40!
Beertje doesn't like to play at all. When I just got her in February 2009 she freeked out when I showed her a toy.
It's just since lately that she sometimes all of a sudden likes to play.
Her favourite toys are this rattle and some wooden coloured beads with a hole in them, so the most simple toys.
She doesn't like more complicated toys and still is a bit afraid for them.
Because she doesn't play that often as my U2 Maxi and my CAG Alex do, I love it even more to see Beertje play.

Rita

Thank you for your reply Wendy!
Beertje is a girl and she can behave like a real "diva" as Amazons are known for.

That she enjoys playing is really special, especially when you know the story behind it.
When I just got her in February 2009 she freeked out when I showed her a toy.
I took her rather long to overcome this fear bit by bit and she still isn't free from it.

That's a shame she is afraid of toys! Looks like you need to stock up on plenty of rattles for her :)

What a sweet video! 40 years old, huh? That's impressive. She looks great. It's heartwarming that she is beginning to play with toys.

Now you will have to teach her to pick them up! What a spectacular bird she is.:loveit:

Awe, she's so sweet. My U2 is also afraid of toys, she has a favorite I keep rebuilding that consists of mostly of a huge wooden piece with holes in it and different ropes are tied through it. About 4 years ago she accepted a bucket full of what I call "kindling", the odds and ends of what everyone else chews up! She loves going through her bucket.

Beertje is a beautiful bird! Nice to hear that she is enjoying herself! I'm not personally familiar with Amazons but am curious about the name, double yellow-headed Amazon. I'm trying not to sound like an idiot, here, but I'm guessing that is due to more yellow color around the head?

Yes Debra, Beertje is almost 40 years old.
I do not know her exact birthday though.
She looks good for her age.
And yes I'm so happy she finally starts to play a bit.
She didn't have a good life before I got her in February 2009.

Hello Wendy,
Last year I bought a box full of second-hand baby-toys, so I have plenty toys for my birds.
It's just that Beertje is afraid for most toys. But she starts to like this rattle and the wooden beads.

Yes Spiritbird, now Beertje's game is "after a wrestle, throwing them at the ground".
I'm the one that has to pick them up time after time again.
Yes, with her age her head is fully yellow and she indeed is spectacular!
I still do not understand why her former owners kept her in a tiny cage at a bedroom, without toys and only a bowl of water and a bowl of seeds.
It broke my heart.
I bought her to save her from that situation.
When I later found out what a problem I had bought with her, because she does not wear a ring, I was shocked. It was NOT leagal to own her!
I went through a lot of efford and fear to finaly get the permission in 2013 to keep her for 5 more years. The I have to request this again.
Beertje was my first real large poarrot, so I didn't know that much back then then I know now.

Well, at least Beertje is slowly becoming interested in a couple of toys. Baby Toys certainly are much cheaper to buy :) I bought Codie a Baby mobile Phone which makes different sound when the buttons are pressed. He loves this one :)

Yes Wendy,

Babytoys are perfect. Of course you have to check them and the material they are made from, out first.
Especially a baby-phoen with all kinds of sounds can be a great toy for a parrot.
Good to hear your Cody has one too!

Beertje is gorveous & for her age she is awedome!! I do hope they give you permission again when you have to apply for her permit. You can obviously tell she loves living with you and you are a great match for her!!

I bought one of those baby toys that makes sounds like the ABCs, plays a few songs and such for Roscoe & Angel before I brought them home, they have nev err wanted anything to do with it. They won't get near it, so I put it up. Funny how dome birds like one thing & another won't go near it. :)

Hello Turquoise,

Thank you for your compliments about my Beertje. Yes she looks very good for her age. We have bonded very well. She was my first "real" parrot!
It caused me a lot of stress when I had to wait more then two years till I finaly got the answer at my request to be able to keep her.
I thought it would be a permit for life. Never expected to receive a permit for just 5 years. I wanna keep Beertje (and all my other birds!) forever!

Rita
