View Full Version : How many breeders on this board

This thread seems very quiet so Im gonna be a trendsetter or not.How many breeders are on this forum, what do you breed and how long have you been breeding your birds.I realize many people believe in adoption as opposed to buying from breeders. We are in Canada and with few exceptions, you either go petstore or breeder for your birds.Of course there are any classified but often the internet scammers sell lots of never exhisted birds .

Atm im breeding budgies, cockatiels and eckkies.ive been a breeder for about 20 years of many breeds of birds
Not many breeders in my state and by the looks of the rescue being quite full and many more birds on a waiting list it is probably a good thing here.

Welcome to the forum Big Red. Are any of the birds you have listed, pets? Or are they all breeding birds? If you don't mind me asking, where do you sell the babies?

Hi Dragonlady.
I sell mostly via Kijiji but also word of mouth.
We have a Green Quaker & a Congo African Grey as pets, although some of our breeders are also tame!

Cedardave is a breeder who also lives in Canada. He will probably check in here....you two may have some things to chat about.
How do your African Grey and Quaker get along? They are such different birds.
Coaccidentally, I may be called a breeder of cockatiels. I'm thinking of delving into the finch world, next.. :). I love the itty-bitties..I love their voice. My problem would be letting them go to someone I don't know well.

The don't actually pay too much attention to each other. The Quaker (female) prefers me and the Grey (also female) prefers my husband.

You are lucky then, I have a couple of birds that are intolerant of other birds or people around me. And yes, please post some pics, we would love to see them.

It took me a while to figure out the posting pics thing as computers are not my strong point either so I am not laughing. If you check out the Help and Support section, you will see a couple of threads/posts on how to upload pics.

Okay, maybe in the next day or two I'll spend the time and see if I can figure it out.
:th_hi: Big Red nice to meet you :pp_welcome:
I look forward to seeing and learning all about your flock
Posting pictures is fairly easy once you do it. See the above link in the text box where we type our post, well it's the third little box (from the globe image) it looks like a frame around a tree (at least to me this is how it looks). If you hold your cursor over it, it should say insert image. Then a box will open and you can choose either from your computer or from the internet.
Give it a try and if you need more assistance, just let me know.

Yes...I see that and that's what it says...so I'll definitely give it a try.
Thanks.

Welcome to Precisely Parrots, Quakerella. Given the name, you obviously breed Quakers. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and are any of them your "pets"? Looking forward to hearing more about you and your birds.

Thank you Dragaonlady2. I have been raising birds for almost 40 years, but only breeding for the last 10. Yes, I do breed Quakers, love those little guys, so comical and loving. I do have pets as well, 3 quakers, 2 blue and 1 green, 1 Eastern Rosella, and 1 lovebird. The Lovebird is actually my sons, but he has gone to University. I am looking forward to hearing about everyone else's birds, as well as help new breeders if I can.

Mare...remembr should you eventually decide to let your little ones go....you have the right of refusal. If you dont feel the individual is responsable enough for your bird...there is nothing that says you have to sell the little one to them.We are strict about the people that end up with our babies. After all you tend to fall in love with them(the birds not the people). If it doesnt feel right...we suggest perhaps this isnt for them.We also have a policy that should their bird not work outb..we will take it back.We will not have our birds bounce from home to home or end up in a rescue.

I agree with you Cedardave, follow your instinct. I have turned down clients because I didn't think they were a suitable match for a bird, and your right you do fall in love. We have the same policy, if you can no longer care for the bird then bring it back to us.

It's good to see that you all are ethical breeders. You may be the ones to keep some of the endangered parrots off the extinct list.
:th_hi::pp_welcome:,
So very glad to meet you both. There is quite a bit of info here about our birds. We are all looking forward to hearing about your beauties!

Were fortunate here..years ago we were able to aquire a rare breeding pair of Tres Marias amazons. They are very similar to the magna double amazon...subtle differances make them differant....I suppose they were imported here before the ban was placed on importing them...

Dave, as a breeder, do you connect with other breeders around endangered parrots? Like, who has any, where did they come from etc.
I understand that my Barrabands are on the watch list in Australia due to their habitat being destroyed. I very seldom see any for sale here in Canada.
I wonder if other countries will ever get together as a group to address some of these issues and how we all can assist each other.
Sorry, didn't mean to not have other breeders respond. Quakerella, Big Red and Mare, please feel free to add to the discussion.

A news item from the BBC which may be of interest to you - they are having a campaign against illegal trading of rare birds in Indonesia. It breaks my heart to see the way the smugglers treat these poor creatures.

That story is so sad. It just feels like more and more birds are slipping away from humanity's grasp.
I had also read that the interest and market for red palm oil was resulting in destroyed habitats for parrots as well. The Internet is a wonderful thing, but I sometimes wonder if it isn't part of the problem as well.....too much information available to the unscrupulous.

The other friends we deal with don't have much in the way of endangered birds. We have a friend with a pair of hyacinth macaws..but she doesn't breed them.Being in Canada..breeding endangered birds doesn't help repopulate any of the wild birds....to cold here and this isn't where they are from or belong. While we very much enjoy bringing young ones into the world for family pets(there are zero good rescues here), we are a small scale hobbyist breeder with fairly low volume of birds going out to people. The place to help populations recover and be removed from the endangered or at risk list sadly is often those places that are involved in causing the issue in the first place...it's unlikely that other than a few organizations devoted to wild bird recovery would be willing to give up their cash cow industry of smuggling these birds into other countries. For us..we only have gotten our birds from people who have been ethical breeders for several generations of these birds. There was only one exception on the ethical part and this was a situation we were unaware of until after the fact...but not a wild caught or endangered species.Other than rescues, that are very common in the US and some other countries...most Canadian bred birds are from good breeders with education as a key component to their operation.Of course there are always exceptions..we are proud of the healthy and well cared for birds we produce.Often breeders get a bad rap from people...for those in it for high volume financial gain that's well deserved. For those of us that spend more on the well being of the birds in our care than we take in...the opposite is true.

Yes, I agree with Canadian breeders not being able to replicate/create habitats for the endangered or any birds. I was thinking more along the lines of at least having breeding pairs so that the birds would not become totally extinct. I am guessing that changes in importation laws will probably make that an impossibility as well. What a world we live in.

Aye, we need to keep diversity in the gene pool of endangered species even if there are restrictions on selling them as pets. We seem to be becoming the custodians for future generations till those in their native habitat can be made to appreciate what they are losing.

Hello Big Red, I know this forum is so out of date and you will probably never see this but my husband and I are very experienced bird owners looking specifically for a young Timneh African Grey to welcome into our family. We have always rescued older birds but my husband has fond memories of being raised with a yellow naped amazon. We are desperately searching for our dream bird to raise with our children now that they're old enough to respect and help care for loving feathered family member. If you know of anyone or if you yourself have any clutches coming up of Timneh's or leads on who to contact we would be forever grateful for your help. We are located just 15 minutes north of Calgary, AB in a smaller suburb city called Airdrie.
Best regards,
Jane & Denis.

Unfortunately, you are correct in that there hasn’t been a lot of traffic on this board lately. Big red hasn’t been back for a while. There used to be a list of Canadian Breeders. You might try to find it on the net.
