I have noticed that Rosie seems more interested in getting tones and syllables down rather than words.

So water can be aawttaa, but said in the same tone I say it. When she says hello or hi, she gets my tone/pitch. She has been working on getting my laugh down. Which I first thought was a monkey sound. Doesn't say much for my laugh! ;) The other night I noticed her trying to get a lower tone when she was interacting with my husband.

Does anyone else notice this with their birds? I find it interesting, that she prefers to get the tonal quality over the actual word first.

I have my birds in total confusion as I have had major issues with breathing and talking. Tone and sound seems very important to them, since my operation a few weeks back my voice has changed. First time I spoke in the bird room after, it went eerily quiet for days. Now they are all trying to get the tone right. But I do think they are making up words as I am certain I talk clearer than that. And maybe jack my macaw will stop doing bad breathing now, as I get better. Pip is trying to say gorgeous but in the new tone but is struggling badly.

Paris seems to work on the words. Just in this last week she went from mumbles to naming both kids and the big dog. Saying good bye when I leave ( huge improvement over the screaming she was doing) and to my embarrassment calling her self "Paris is a pain in my ass"

Savannah is like that. She does more tone then words. She is working to learn more words. It's fun to hear her mumble.

Salsa is the big talker/sound maker around here. He loves to have burping contests with me (in which he'll actually alter the inflection of his burps), and he definitely communicates his spoken feelings with pronounced tonal variations as well. He's in fact so into communicating with his tone pitch variations that I sometimes refer to him as "Mister Inflection" ;). He'll give some of his statements a flavor of abrupt authority by making them into assertive demands that sound much like command orders. And he'll use his upward inflection tones within many of his utterances to convey all sorts of questions to me throughout the day - even though he usually speaks clearly enough to express those questions through words alone.

Salsa's tendency to apply appropriate tonal pitch adds such feeling to his statements. As far as his questions, he expresses such sincerity with them that he always makes me want to explain things to him so he understands and is satisfied with my answers ;). So I would say that Salsa is quite an easy bird to communicate with most of the time :th_biggrin:

My best talker is my ekkie Leyla Belle. She doesn't try to copy tonal sounds, but she does add a definite southern drawl to her words and she will say some things with a higher than normal pitch which is what she picks up from my phrases I teach her to say. She much prefers to say long phrases than learning one word at a time. When I talk to her she will turn slightly sideways with one eye staring at me leaning in listening to me very intently. That's when I know she is deciphering what she heard and will repeat it with great accuracy.

Ruby Jewel came to me with a deeper than normal voice as far as my other two macaws voices sound. She still has a more deeper sound to her words and at first I thought it was from her listening to her breeder, but I now think that is just her unique sound. She is not a big talker yet and her words are still very hard to understand. She is young and it is coming along slower with her than the two Catalina boys who came to me talking up a storm. Everything is just a slowed down version with a Green Wing compared to the other species of macaws it seems.

Roscoe and Angel can say lots of things and they say some words in different tones. One minute they are saying "Hello" one way & another in a totally different way. And they have several ways to say "What?" it is funny to hear & I often encourage it by copying them. What amuses me is that neither one seems to have the southern drawl to their words like Leyla Belle. I know I definitely have the Texas drawl and they should be picking it up, but I just don't hear it in their voice. Miss Leyla Belle sounds like a true Southern Belle as her name implies! :th_pinklol2:

I haven't noticed Jester doing that. I, on the other hand, try to copy his voice when talking to him. :th_biggrin:

Interesting that GW's maturing is slower than the other macaws. I only have Rosie, so I have nothing to compare it to.

I love that Leyla Belle has a drawl. You will have to post a video of it! :)
