Mixed nuts are super cheap now so I cleaned out the bin and got 23 lbs. for 99 cents a pound.

To the freezer they go...

It worked out perfectly last year. I got 46 pounds last year and it lasted the whole year. Only half that this year.

Wow!! Don't I wished I could find mixed nuts that cheap around here!! So far I have paid like $3.49 a pound for unshelled mixed nuts. Geez, I'd love to find them cheaper since I give my macaws shelled & unshelled nuts every other day. They don't get more than a small measuring cup of shelled and up to 4 unshelled nuts (depending on if it is large nuts or smaller nuts), but it still goes quickly. :(

I know most things we read says nuts for macaws about 3 times a week, but I have a feeding schedule of all foods meaning pellets, nuts, snacks, whatevers and fresh cut up fruits & veggies on one day. And the next day, unless they are out of staple foods in their bowls they don't get any dry foods. They do get cooked noodle/veggie foods & birdie breads on that day. Since I have so many bowls for variuos different foods in each enclosure, they rarely are out of pellets and other dry mixes. Except on the days someone wants to toss everything to the floor!! LOL

Another suggestion is to vacuum seal them if you have a vacuum sealer. That's what I do with Mango's pellets. I seal them then freeze them, Keeps them fresher longer.

I thought you couldn't freeze nuts in shell only shelled nuts.

I've done it a few years now and we've never had a problem. She seems to like them just as much as if they weren't frozen. Sadly, none of the humans in the house eat them so the freezer is full just for Josie.
