Im stating to be known as [the girl with the birds]. This lady didn't want her Eclectus anymore. She wanted it to go with someone with bird experience . So of course I asked a million questions about him.He could be handled ,doesn't bite . So Im like ,oh hes yelling a lot I bet [and that was it] . She said he was too loud . I thought well whats loud ? I don't think I know anymore. So I saw him ,he has a severely deformed beak that gets overgrown. She takes him to her vet to get it groomed. She did not care for him [and said I don't know why anyone would want birds .He would step up on her ,but he wouldn't let her pet him.He stepped up on me and I could pet him . So of course I took him knowing she didn't care for him . He can eat and groom himself with that beak. The only good thing with it is I don't think he could pluck himself. I will take him to get his beak looked at . But I thought I heard an overgrown one meant they were lacking something. Cute guy ,his voice is a riot he talks .I figure it will make everyones diet even better. Id like to say with all these birds I want to be known not as a hoarded but "Bird Collector". This picture you can see the black part of his beak is totally on the other side [and its huge] poor guy.[Users must be registered and logged in to view attached photos or hyperlinks] ([Users must be registered and logged in to view attached photos or hyperlinks])

Hi Marley , i am so glad you have found some one that will take care of you, that beak is not good, here is a little info for you,............Overgrown beaks may be frequently seen in Eclectus parrots. The most frequently made observation is an overgrowth of the upper mandible or rhinotheca. In most cases, malocclusion or chronic liver disease not identified as predisposing factors, as is seen in some other species such as the budgerigar and amazon genus. General observations suggest that overgrown beaks are seen more frequently in birds that are being fed a diet that lacks the large amount of fresh foods commonly recommended for this genus, and in those birds that do not have soft wood perches for normal chewing behaviors.

It has been commented amongst aviculturalists that the beaks become long only towards the end of winter, and usually become more short once the breeding season has begun. Proposed reasons for this observation stem from the frequent winter time drop in the availability of the usual assortment of fresh fruits and vegegetable material that is fed during the remainder of the year. It would be logical to assume that during the winter months, the plane of nutrition may easily drop. Chewing behavior usually increases in the breeding pairs just prior to the breeding season, and this may easily account for increased wear of some of these overgrown beaks and their return to normal appearance during breeding season.

Injectable vitamin A and multivitamin supplementation may be used as a part of treatment. In most cases, however, corrective grinding, an improved dietary plane, and providing more wood for chewing is all that is indicated.

well hopefully she has not done damage to the liver and with the right care from you which i know he will get he just may come good , ive never seen the bottom half over grown like that, he is going to need full bloods done, and a lot of grinding, i hope all comes back ok for him, that beak will need grinding for him to be able to eat properly. its such a shame what people do to birds, and they say the noise was the problem , what noise , even with all mine i dont hear the noise every one else does, to me its music not noise.

Marley is so cute. He has certainly found a good home with you Terri :)

Hopefully, the vet can sort his beak and there is no other underlying problems!

He is so cute!! I bet you will have his beak and his diet all taken care of in a very short time. I've seen photos of horribly deformed beaks on several kinds of parrots before and they live a very normal life with help form a good vet who knows what they are doing. Poor guy, but he has found his reason for living with you! A big Congrats to your new flock member.
