View Full Version : Does Anyone's Parrot React to Certain "Cues"?

So this morning while getting the kids lunches ready I was running the kitchen sink. Rosie immediately started yelling, "Apple, Apple…APPLE!!!". My daughter started laughing and said every time I turn the kitchen sink on Rosie wants an apple. I thought about it and she is right. I guess since I wash her apple before I give it to her, she thinks me turning the faucet on means she is getting something yummy.
Which got me thinking, does anyone else's parrots have a cue that has them looking for a specific thing?

Codie does not say anything about a certain food, but if he sees me with a newspaper in my hand, then he starts yelling "Codie coming out" LOL. He associates newspaper with me cleaning his cage and knows this means he is coming out for the day :)
Sassy will whisper, "night-night Sassy", when she sees me pick up the sheet I cover her with at night. She'll also scream like a little girl, when she sees me take Amigo out of his cage! :th_biggrin:

Whenever Frankie sees me in the kitchen cooking, he starts hollering "Gimme a kiss". That's his way of saying "I know you're fixing something yummy and I want my share". lol. Little Amber starts dancing when she hears popcorn popping. That bird would eat her weight in popcorn if we let her.

If Merlin can hear plates clattering in the kitchen, or the microwave door / any kitchen noise really. He microwave beeps at me :)
He's associated kitchen noises with the microwave going off (I work a lot of lates so I get fast food then, we're not hooked on microwave food I swear!) so he does his beeps to get me to give him some food. :)
Merlin screams if he sees a sheet, because he knows it means nap time. He HATES being covered now :(.
Charlie says 'whatya doing?' when he hears any food rustling, plates, etc. Because he wants his share.
My boys are very food orientated :D

This is so cute to read about. Nice thread! Whenever Chipper sees the mist bottle for a bath he says "want a shower"

Similar to Dianne's Chipper, whenever I pick up the mist bottle here Salsa always begins repeatedly saying "noww? ...nowW? ...no[Users must be registered and logged in to view attached photos or hyperlinks]" with a heavy upward query inflection on each such utterance. Sals just LOVES to be misted or have a shower and his "nows" are always emitted with eager anticipation :)

My Max says Hello to me when I get home from work every day as soon as she sees me. I guess giving her a Almond after she says it helps. Lol

Whenever Josie sees me folding laundry, she always asks "whatcha doing" and when I tell her folding laundry she will say oh like it is the most interesting thing she's heard. She also says hello whenever anyone walks in the door...she will say it 50 times until she gets a hello back.

Love all the stories! Quincy will say "bless you" when he hears some one sneeze and for the first time in all the years I've had him, he said "bless you" after he sneezed the other day. LOL! He also says "Go upstairs" when he hears us going up to bed for the night. He knows when we go upstairs it is night night time for the birds. Coqui will say "bye bye" when we go upstairs for the night. Savannah will say "hello" if she sees herself in the mirror. Quincy will make mmmmm noises when we give him a treat and will say "there" when we give him his bowl. He will also say "you're alright" when he's nervous.

My flock has several things they equate to eating, coming and going like everyone else's birds here do.
Since our dining room table is about 5ft from the big kids enclosures if they are already covered for the night Roscoe and Angel will still scream, squawk, and say Hello to get me to share with them. They love eating with us! Angel says Hello as soon as I come into the house from work in the mornings. His breeder says he always did that with her and that is what she missed most when he came to live with me. She was very close to him since she spent more time with him due to his disabilities and kept him a good bit longer.
Roscoe knows as soon as I get the nut treat bowl out and ask him if he is ready to go back to his cage that he is going to get his favorite~~pistachios! He is very greedy for them and now grabs 2 every time. If he doesn't get but one he immediately grabs another so he has his 2 pistachios.
When I am fixing their breakfast in the mornings Ruby Jewel is always brought out on her play perch. She begins to get excited when she sees the bowls head toward the enclosures. I put her back in last. I come up to her and start telling her, "What do we have?" "What do we have?" meaning in her bowl. She comes quickly to get on my arm and she will go, "Oh Oh" to my question. I then begin to tell her, "We have grapes (her favorite fruit), and and veggies, and nuts and snoodles (noodles)." "You like snoodles" and whatever else I have in her bowl for that day. She is looking toward her home the whole time as we walk and keeps saying "Oh Oh". She's not a big talker yet, but she is picking up words more quickly now. I have the most fun with her and "what do we have" in her bowl cause she gets so excited to be going back to her home to eat! :)
Leyla Belle does a lot of hyena like laughs and Uh Huhs when I put her bowl in her cage (not sure where she picked up the hyena sounds from?). She is on her play perch that is against her open door, so she is able to go in and inspect her food right then. While she is digging into her bowl she is making baby like sounds of delight. As much as she talks and can say long phrases, breakfast brings out short silly little girl sounds in her. LOL

Mine do all the time. If we are in the kitchen cooking, they know supper is coming and will start screaming. They know when bedtime is and start saying "night night". I am sure there are other things too just can't think of them all off the top of my head.
