Christmas is getting close, with so many birds I would not be able to afford toys for them all. I was wondering if any of you have made toys or come up with things that your birds love to play with or destroy as the case maybe. Any ideas appreciated.

There are lots of members here who make their own bird toys. I am quite lucky in the sense that Codie loves things like, yoghurt pots, toilet roll cartons, plastic lids, old flip flops, etc! Oh and he is in his element with a phone directory. This keeps him amused for hours :)

Hahaa, I gotta try the phone directory!LOL, he just tramples all over it first and then starts with the shredding. Another good one is a kitchen roll, but if you give Spencer one of these, then be prepeared for one major mess. LOL

Lol, thanks but I haven't had a clean house in 10 years! :th_biggrin:
He's always pushing stuff off counters, attacking tissue boxes to where is looks as if it snowed, opening drawers and pulling stuff out and carrying his food to other places (than his cage) and eating where he feels comfortable. I'm just the maid, lol!

hi dawn, welcome. i've tried making things before but jasper's not too interested, only in shredding things. you could make toys out of boxes of different sizes, or use small boxes and hide treats inn those. you could wrap them for Christmas then they'd have the extra pleasure of ripping the paper off :)

you can also buy big packs of toy making parts and create your own from the pieces. you'll have fun there :)

Thank you I have a mixture of broken toys so some things can be re used. My birds love shredding and making a mess too. I think my Hoover is over worked. Boxes is good idea as I just moved and have plenty. Have loads of off cuts from the avaries that were built here so going to see what can do with them too.

My cockatoos love anything cardboard or wicker, I tie these to the inside of their cages. The Sassy Goffin's favorite is the cardboard egg cartons. Chip the cockatiel loves anything stringy or ropey, he's not much of a chewer. For my U2, I cut different size squares of pine and string it on wire, he lives to chew! Shredding toys are always fun for them but they don't last long with this crew!

Did you manage to come up with some handmade toys for Christmas for your fids? My fids love the phonebooks, milk cartons, cardboard boxes and shoes! Just to name a few! LOL!

Sometimes it hard to come up with new and fresh ideas. At least you have some time to think about it for next Christmas! :th_wink:
