I'd like to introduce you all to Maggie, the goffins cockatoo. We just brought her home on tuesday and she has settled in so well in only 4 short days! My husband and I have been talking about adopting a goffins for several years now so when I got the call about little Maggie I just couldn't say no. According to her previous family she is 5 years old and they had her for two years, prior to that she was with one of their family members. They called me because they are moving soon and didn't want to take her :( They cared for her but they felt she was just too messy for them. She is a bit of an overpreener as you can see in the photos, she doesn't seem to mess with her head, wings or tail but her belly, back and shoulders are all down to her fluffy down feathers. She was eating mainly seed in her previous home and only had one hard plastic toy so I'm hoping that with her new and improved diet and new toys she will let her beautiful feathers grow out with her next molt

It didn't take long for her to warm up to us and since the minute we brought her home she has been stepping up for me and my hubby and just loves to cuddle. She has eaten every food I've offered her and seems to be having a blast playing with all her new toys! She also started talking today and so far we have heard, "I'm a pretty birdy" and "pretty birdy maggie!" which is surprising because her old family told us that she used to say her name but hadn't said it for quite some time.

She loves sharing food(when it's mine to share anyway!) So I've been using this as a bonding method since we brought her home. The very first day she was here she climbed off her cage onto me and started eating my general tso's tofu right off my plate! Here she is today eating some thanksgiving leftovers with me, her favorite was the corn, followed by the mashed potatoes but she tried a brussel sprout too :)

She really is great, she has a few quirks, like, she's terrified of the ceiling fan and is convinced it's a spiraling beast that's going to descend only to attack and torment her. She was very quiet the first two days, which I honestly didn't expect to last, and while she still isn't a huge screamer she has decided that going into the kitchen is unacceptable and even though she can see whoever is in there and exactly what is going on she screams the entire time until they exit. She is a huge love bug though and loves to be held, we have been limiting cuddle time so as not to completely spoil her, she gets to sit on us for a little and then goes back to her cage for an hour or so, sometimes with the door open, and then we pick her back up again. For the most part she keeps herself occupied playing with her toys, eating or preening herself. I've been watching her preen and she doesn't seem to be plucking any feathers or down or really even barbering them but she does seem to preen a lot. I think this may be in part to the fact that she is incredibly dusty, even by cockatoo standards, and she desperately needs a bath. The only problem is that the old owners told me she is terrified of the shower and I fear someone may have tried to use a spray bottle as discipline because as soon as she saw it she completely freaked out and hung off the back of the outside of her cage :( I gave her a large dish in the bottom of her cage but she hasn't explored it yet although she did watch pretty intently as I splashed my fingers in it. :)

Maggie is beautiful!! She definitely shows you she loves being part of your flock now by how she is adjusting so quickly. :th_hug8:

I love the photos of Maggie sharing your Holiday feast. She is having the time of her life getting to eat all the good & new foods she was missing out on in her former home. You are a gem for taking her in and showing her that life is going to be awesome from here on in! :)

Maggie is totally adorable and I am sure under your care she will get used to a shower or two. Try a gentle introduction to the sound by taking a shower and letting her be nearby several times. I bet you already have a shower perch. I would let her use that perch outside of the shower a bit. Here I am making suggestions to an expert bird person!

Congrats on her :) Im surprised the owners (were concerned with how messy she is]. That would be the least of my worries .Maybe with the new environment she will be able to stop overpreening. Pearl my [goffin ] came with doing a little plucking [now he doesn't :) Pearl has tons of toys put prefers to shred cardboard and newspaper [so does my LS2]. Wondering if its a white too thing? Does Maggie like that too?

Terri, Sassy also prefers to shred cardboard, newspaper, envelopes filled with bills, over her toys! Sara, congrats on your new addition! Maggie is beautiful, I'm sure she'll blossom with you :) The Goffin's feisty character is so much fun!

As soon as she is out of quarantine I'm going to take her back and see how she handles just being in the bathroom while I take a shower. Hopefully a few times of doing that and she will be okay with getting in too. And I am by no means an expert, honestly, I don't believe there is such a thing as a parrot expert. Some of us may have more experience than others but I also acknowledge that there is a lot i'm sure we don't know. There is always room to learn and I love hearing what has worked for other people with their birds. They are all so different, what works for one may not work for another.

She has been settling in very well. She has started to fly, something they said she didn't do despite not being clipped. She's gotten pretty used to the ceiling fan and I honestly don't think she is that messy but then again, we have tons of birds in our house so my idea of messy is probably different then most. I don't see a little seed on the floor as being messy, I just sweep it up and get on with my life. To me, messy is a dog that isn't potty trained lol. She is quite loud. She screams A LOT! We have just been ignoring the behavior and trying to replace it with talking. She says "pretty bird" "maggie" and "pretty maggie" which I also found odd because her old owners told us that she knew her name when they got her but she stopped saying it, she says it all the time here. She even sings and dances, she doesn't really sing words but she drags out different notes and noises as she sways back and forth, it's so cute! And she is super clingy, my poor hubby fell asleep on the chair next to her cage last night. She climbed down on him and was walking around on his legs, this went on for about a half an hour before he sat up and looked at me, at which point I realized he was sleeping the whole time!

My Ls2 came screaming and we were able to convert her to a pretty sound [she doesnt talk] .When she wanted attention[and that worked].But Pearl my Goffin does the tempertantrum scream .My other bird noise does not bother me [but this does]. He is a insecure bird .So Im willing to try EVERYTHING!.Believe it or not when hes carrying on I dont ignore him [tried that].I take him out and reassure him [that works]. At night he has to be totally covered [even most the lights out.] I dont know if its a male thing .I hear people who have females, their great. I guess all birds are going to be different [cant lot them into one thing works for all] Hes really my hardest. Im suprised you dont hear more about them . They lot them in with rosebreasteds on the internet.

Honestly it seems like maggie just enjoys screaming. For the first few days she was completely quiet then she started this obnoxious habit of screaming anytime anyone was in the kitchen, which is strange because our living room(where she is) is only separated from the kitchen by an island, there are no walls or anything so she can see the entire kitchen from her cage. I have no idea why but as soon as anyone is over there she screams incessantly until they exit the room. We have even gone so far as to walk her through the kitchen, opening every cabinet door showing her whats inside, trying to alleviate any uneasiness she may have. It has helped a bit but not entirely. The reason I say that she enjoys screaming is because sometimes she will be on top of her cage and she will hold her wings out and just jump around screaming, it's not like anything is scaring her or upsetting her, she just gets wound up and a bit crazy. Even when she plays with her toys she will scream at them. And covering her doesn't stop her, when she is ready for bed we cover her cage but she will scream until all the lights are off, the tv can be on as long as it's not too loud but if the lights are on she will scream until they are turned off. I personally don't mind any of the birds yelling, I've gotten really good at tuning them out, the problem is, we rent out our upstairs bedroom to two friends(a couple), and one of them works third shift. They have never complained about the birds but I'm sure they don't enjoy hearing them at 9am when they are trying to sleep. At the same time though, they knew I bred birds when they moved in here and I told them upfront that they can be loud at times so really, I don't know if I should feel obligated to keep the noise down but common courtesy makes me feel really guilty when the birds start carrying on. :/

My Sassy Goffin's can be a screamer but hers are for attention, mostly. When she hears my husbands voice, in the morning, she starts in until he goes and says hi, he'll usually bring her out to sit with him till he has to head outside to do chores. She's pretty happy after that! I'll have her out, with me, only when my hubs isn't around, that's the only time she likes me! My U2 and Sassy are both screamers at night if there are any lights on in their room, I finally figured out that even a night light is a no-no! Amigo kept going off, last night, because he could tell there was a light on in the garage!

Hopefully, Sara, your renters have discovered the beauty of earplugs! :th_biggrin:
