This food has really fantastic sounding ingredients but I am wondering if anyone has experience with feeding it to fids. [Users must be registered and logged in to view attached photos or hyperlinks]

Never heard of it before. Sounds like a pretty good food source to me even though it has a lot of seed in it.

Looks really good although for $25 for 4lbs it should be!! You have to keep in mind that budgies are naturally seed eaters they NEED seed in their diet. Seed isn't all bad IMHO. I keep seeing people that are switching their budgies to an all pellet diet and I bite my tongue on the subject but it does make me cringe. I don't believe they should be on an all seed diet but I honestly believe if you have to choose between all seed and all pellets I'd go with all seed, assuming it's a healthy seed mix and not all millet. We do healthy seed, pellets, egg food, sprouts and veggies :) I think variety is the spice of avian life. You have to look at what they would be eating in the wild and go from there, and last time I checked, I've never seen a pellet tree lol.

I feed seed at 1 tsp. per day mixed with pellets. I also have been feeding Goldenfeast petite legumes which has a wonderful list of ingredients. I read the small print on the Goldenfeast label and saw it said refegerate after opening which I did not see before. Now I was looking for something different. Sara would you suggest egg food for us here and what kind specifically. My guys will not eat an egg any way. Also does the Dr. Harvey have enough seed our should I buy seed separately? I like Volkmann's best.

As long as your birds have cuttlebone for calcium and legumes for protein there is no reason to feed egg food other than just as a different treat. I like using egg food for parent birds because it can help put them in the mood for breeding and it's a fantastic source of extra calcium which momma birds need to replace the calcium depleted from developing eggs.

I love volkmans seed! The dr harveys is very similar to volkmans parakeet except it has all of the added dehydrated goodies. I think an even better approach would be volkmans parakeet seed mixed with a small amount of higgins snack attack small fruit and veggie. But that's just my opinion. It wouldn't take much of the fruit and veggie mixed with the volkmans, I'd say no more than 15% of the mix should be the fruit and veg, it may be more nutritious and cost effective than the dr harveys that way, although I'd really have to break everything down to be sure on that.

Thank you so much. After we finish the Dr. H food will give it a try. The first time I fed the fruit flavored foods on the market my birds both had loose droppings so I stopped that.

The higgins fruit and veggie is actually all dehydrated veggies and fruits. I love it as a transition food for babies that are just starting to pick at solid foods and it makes a great addition to the adults food as well :) The only downside is the price, a large bag of it is like $80! but for your two budgies you would really only need a tiny bag. we go through a ton of food here! I am dead serious when I say we probably spend at least twice on bird food than what we do on people food in a month! :p

There must be significant expenses for breeders. As you say the food, lighting, cleaning, time spent, vet care, equipment and much more. Four pounds of this food will last us quite a while. This time I will look at the label to be sure it does not need refrigeration after opening.
