I'm far from an expert on snakes but from what I've heard they get a lot worse rap than what they deserve... Like most animals, they won't attack for no reason - most recipients of snakebites are people who have either stood on one by accident or tried to kill/handle one... I'm assuming snakes are a lot worse up North where Steve is (where its a lot hotter) than they are down the bottom of Aus where I am - but down here we only see them in late Spring and Summer, and the only advice we are given is if there is one near you, stay completely still so that you don't frighten it, and to not try and handle them. As far as I know, snakebites really aren't all that common...
All over Australia though, the majority of our snakes are venomous, so whether you know what kind it is or not, its pretty safe to assume it is ;)

I'm scared of snakes, but other than driving past them on the roads I have never encountered a wild one close up... Spiders on the other hand, which over here can be just as deadly as the snakes, are EVERYWHERE, and I'm absolutely PETRIFIED of them!

Awesome Steve!!! Love both photos and the critters in them. :th_biggrin: You already know I love snakes and other reptiles.

Snakes & lizards are some of my most favorite reptiles. I'm not a fan of handling venomous species, but I find them very intriguing and beautiful just the same as their non venomous cousins. LOL I am quite the 'Country Girl' and used to chase snakes & lizards along with all kinds of insects and 4 footed critters as a youngun on my Grandparent's farm. If I managed to catch one I would proudly bring it home to keep. That is until my Mom saw it & made me promptly turn it loose. :(

yes we do have the most venomous snakes here in Australia, but that one is just a python, i breed them so they dont scare me , i used to have venoms, still have a 3meter king brown that live's in one of the sheds at mum's number 2 on the most deadly list no 1 lives in the rock pile, 4,8 and 12 are on the other side of creek, now it is really easy to tell venomous from non venomous just by were the eye's sit on the head , and it's the same as the dinosaur from meat eater's to the plant eater's, eye's on top of head means venomous, eye's to the side non venomous, now the brown snake does not need a reason to attack they will chase you, as for standing still not a good idea, as snakes pick up heat they do not see very well, so if you see one you back up and go wide keep the heat signal down. iv'e been bitten by a few venomous snakes and its good to keep anti-venom close. the last one was a red belly black got me when i jumped in the pool.they do like to swim

Steve, I didn't know that about the eyes! And I live in the country. Thanks for the lesson in snakes as it will be helpful when we run across one out in the property. We always thought it was the nose you go by and we didn't want to get close enough to see just what kind of nose they have. lol

yes its a lot easier to see where the eyes sit from a distance, about 10 years back i used to do a reptile and mammal, show in shopping malls, the croc's where the biggest hit.
