hey everyone. i was just wondering, how many of you feed nuts in the shells. i usually dont, but lately i have been giving cooper his pistachios in the shell trying to teach him how to open them himself. i want to do peanuts too, but heard that they can have some kind of fungus on the shell, is that true? but also, would he be able to open an almond shell? i have heard of a senegal who opens almonds with no trouble, so a quaker could with enough practice right?

I feed my guys nuts in the shell and they love them. It makes them work for there food. I would say try a few in the shell almonds and see how it goes. I bet you he could get them open.
As for peanuts, I have heard that they can have a fungus on the shell. I would get them from a good source if you are going to try them and I would limit how much you give your bird.

Codie has Walnuts and Pistachio's in their shells. I crack the walnut in half for him. If he as Almonds or Brazils I have to crack these for him a little bit as he cannot get them open himself. You dont need to cook the nuts!

what i meant by "cooked" was buying them roasted(or whatever they say, i think its roasted.) at the store. not me cooking them myself.

Plain raw almonds is what you want. Not roasted. They are the same here in the US Wendy. :)

You can pre-crack the harder shells a bit. I think it entices them to eat the meat inside.

Almonds are a great "starter" nut. The shells are shreddable so even smaller birds can get in. The first couple I would open them a bit so it is easy to get at the meat. That way they learn that there is a tasty treat inside.

I have a source for free fresh organic pecans...but unfortunately found mold inside a few of them, and now I am afraid to serve them whole. :(
Just remembered...I tried a whole walnut on Jack when he was younger, but his beak wasn't strong enough to crack it. I wonder if he could do it now!

yeah i think you gotta be careful about things like mold. i would try to see if he can crack it. maybe with enough practice he might find a certain technique.

Lol, thanks mrgoogls...he couldn't much hold on to the walnut before...but he was a very clumsy youngster, he is getting better now.
Yes, mold can be a concern...but it seems less so with "store bought" nuts. They probably x-ray them for mold or something...let's hope it isn't because they are treated with anything. Hmm. Never thought of that. Off to google...
Sassy Goffin's girl, will not eat almonds any other way than from the shell. If I give her raw almonds that are out of the shell she won't touch them, she's kind of a weirdo :). I notice around here where I live, whole almonds in the shell are sold only around the winter holidays. I'm going to stock up this year and freeze a few bags for later in the year!

We have hundreds of almond orchards here in Northern CA. I want to go pick up a bunch cheap.

i havent been to the store or anything yet. so no almonds. but cooper is getting much better at opening pistachios on his own! he can get open even the ones that are barely cracked open. but, he usually drops the nut part when he breaks it open because he is holding the outer shell. so i usually give him is "training pistachios" on a flat surface, like the floor, a table/desk, my bed, where he can pick up the nut. once he gets better i will start to give him more in his cage.
This was something interesting I learned from Amigo's vet today. I brought shelled walnuts, as part of his regular things he likes to eat, for Amigo's stay at the hospital. The vet told me that walnut shells carry aspergillus spores and we need to stay away from walnuts! Almonds and pine nuts are her favorite nuts for our birds.

I had heard that about walnuts also but could not find much info on it. I am glad you said something.
Kenny, I'm thinking that because the nut came from the shell, it's been exposed. The vet didn't feed any to Amigo but she and her staff enjoyed them :) !

I buy RAW in shell only except for peanuts. I buy only roasted in the shell, no salt. That kills anything on the shell. Anyway that is the advice I was given from the breeder.

I don't feed peanuts at all....too much of a risk between salmonella and aspergillosis

Wendy had posted this in another post on nuts, for our birds. Very informative!
