View Full Version : Watson has arrived!
My youngest son, wonderful, smart, the whole package, is leaving soon for 'a quarter abroad' program to Oaxaca, Mexico soon, till the end of November. We get to take care of his Flemish Giant rabbit, named Watson, till then, eek! Watson is pretty cool but we are seriously running out of space for extra critters! Watson does not live in a rabbit hutch, he has a fence/cage that he is surrounded by while sleeping or eating and it's set up in the guest room (back bedroom). At all other times he is out and about, thankfully he poos and pees in a litter box. Well, you will be hearing about our trials for the next few months so I thought I should introduce you to Watson![Users must be registered and logged in to view attached photos or hyperlinks]

Cute ,when I was young [before 12 birds ] . I had 6 rabbits [I know all about rabbits ] . I even had one trained in my first apartment [and boy did he chew].Cords was his favorite!!! I learned aluminum foil was the only thing that worked on the exposed ones.

yes very cute and i do think you are going to have lots of story's to tell us about Watson over his stay with you
Terri, I am soo happy I have a friend indeed because you will have a friend in need over these next few months! That is an awesome tip, so far, on the wires. The first time Watson came to visit, we had no phone service for two days! All the tv/satellite, phone, computer, internet, etc. wires are at the moment covered with towels. Not a good look but I think aluminum foil will be an improvement!:th_biggrin:
If you google Flemish Giant rabbit, you will have a clue as to how big these guys can get! I just hope Watson doesn't get THAT big in the next few months! My son has Watson on a strict diet in hopes he doesn't get too big. His diet consists of very green lettuce, Bok Choy, fresh parsley, basil, cilantro, (no chard or spinach), broccoli (twice a week), a cole slaw mix, two handfuls of pellets and a large handful of Timothy hay,,,twice a day. The plate that he is fed on is dinner size plate and stands about six inches high with his food that he finishes off in 20mins. Many challenges have come my way and this one sounds pretty easy! (The chewed wires, so far, have been the hardest!)

They are so fun, I had a dwarf mix who was the most opinionated animal I have ever been around. We too had issues with cords. :-) She used to love to watch tv and if you were in her way, watch out, cause she would give you a warning thump and if you didn't head her you were getting a sharp nip!

Nice looking rabbit. I used to keep rabbits years ago. I had a house bunny once.

We have a French Lop (Flemish Giant X English Lop) and he's a big boy, so I bet Watson is going to be huuuge!
Good luck with him, house bunnies are fantastic! :)
What I have learned so far, is, he will chew on the aluminum foil that I wrapped around the phone and electric cords, I'm going to double wrap them in hopes he doesn't get through. My daughter walked into the house this morn and saw him on top of one of the kitchen chairs, chewing through the wicker! What I've learned is, he can't have free run of the house while unsupervised :). He is no messier than I expected, though. Shelly, my son did all his research on this rabbit, before he got him and knew that he could be litter trained. If they pee somewhere, they will always go back to that spot to pee and poo. That's where you want to place the litter box.
He's also friendly in a very subtle way. When I go into his room in the morn he is climbing on the bars wanting out. He will hop around my feet snuggling me for a few seconds then follow me out to the kitchen while I make his breakfast. Awfully cute, but he doesn't like to be cuddled or held, much. His favorite place to get scritches is around his head and cheeks. He will hop up on the couch sometimes and stretch out beside us.

Oh No!!! The aluminum foils not working ,He sounds like a adventure !! They can be quite tame [the more time you spend with them] Mine used to lay on the couch too.
Terri, I have faith that the foil will work, I just need to double wrap it. He didn't actually get to the wires he just nibbled off a bit of the foil. I was talking to my son today, about this, and he is going to order up some wire protector covers and have them sent here. Until then I think the foil will do :).
We had a bunch of family come visit, for a few days, and Watson had to be moved downstairs to the ping pong room. It's actually a better room for him, my husband bought some plywood to put under his cage, although his cage is always open he does sleep there. Here is a pic of him in his litter box that he is out growing. When I first met Watson, he could sprawl out in that box and not touch the ends![Users must be registered and logged in to view attached photos or hyperlinks]
He's seriously a pretty cool pet!

Watson is a pretty color. He looks so cute in his litter box.:th_biggrin:
I have that same fencing to keep my dogs out of areas while I am at work. I love it for an indoor fence! :th_hehe:

Watson is just so cute!
He's become so friendly! In the morning when I open my bedroom door, it attaches to the ping pong room, Watson comes running up, ready for some scritches, then follows me around, he bucks like a horse! I've had to pull up all the wires, (clocks, lamps, fans, etc.), and set them high on tables so he doesn't chew them but other than that, it's all good. He now has free run of our bedroom and ping pong room! He knows how to pull open doors that are just cracked open, so there is no keeping him out! :)
