Hey so I was just wondering if there is a food guide out there for Large Macaws? I have a Scarlet and I don't want to feed him something that's bad for him or he can't have.

If anyone knows of a link to a food guide please let me know!

The book Phoenix Landing sells is wonderful. Not only does it have ideas there are educational tid bits in the front few pages. Not necessarily just for a Macaw but for all parrots.

Two foods that are definite no no's are chocolate and avocado! They are toxic! Generally a good pellet diet, lots of nuts & plenty fresh fruits and vegetables are a great start. I make a "mash" that consists of pasta, brown rice, veggies, oatmeal and a couple of other items I can't remember at the moment. I freeze it, so it's been a couple of weeks since I made it. Also I make a corn bird bread as well. It is a basic corn bread mix with extra eggs with shells and veggies in it. Just some ideas. You don't have to do the mesh or corn bread right now, but it adds a lot of nutrition to there diet and is easy to make in big batches and you can freeze both. Hope that helps!

Junk food! :th_biggrin: Of course, an occasional French fry one hurt. LOL!

I've heard onion and garlic may not be good. I'm still out on this one but try to stay away from it just in case. If I think of other things, I will let you know!

Like Dianne said the book will give you just about everything you need to know about what to & not to feed any bird actually. There are good articles in most parrot species books and magazines, as well as sites on macaws where they give guidance in what foods to give the.

I use pellets, mixed nuts in shells & shelled, fresh fruits & veggies, cooked pasta & rice, all kinds of cooked beans and frozen mixed veggies when I cook the mashes & breads for mine.

I have read mushrooms are not good for parrots also and you have to watch how much veggies you feed which contain oxalic acid. It will bind with the calcium and make it not be asorbed by their system. There are many veggies that fall into this category, they are not no nos, just shouldn't be fed heavily to them every day. The books tell all that fall within the oxalic acid category.
