View Full Version : July Photo Competition (Wing Shots)

Turquoise
07-01-2013, 06:10 AM
OK folks, it is time to get our first photo contest underway.

The subject matter for the July contest will be: ~~WING SHOTS~~ The photos can be of wing spreads in flight or still shots.

The prize will be donated by me and will be a wall hanging/ornament in the parrot species of the winner's choice. The size, general looks and details of the prize being offered can be seen in the thread: Our new monthly Photo Competitions! in this forum under Celebrations & Recognitions

The rules are pretty simple:

1. Only one entry per member per contest.

2. Please add your bird's name along with the photo. It will be used
to identify your entry on the poll along with your username.

3. No copy write photos. Please make sure you are the owner of
the photo you enter.

4. Please, no photos that clearly endanger your bird in any way.

5. All photos to be entered in the contest need to be posted in this thread.

6. And the most important rule of all~~Lets Have Fun!!!~~

The contest starts today, the 1st of July and runs til the 21st of July.

The 22nd of July a poll will be added with all of the photos in order of their posted date.

If we have more photos than there are available poll entry spaces, the photos to be added for final judging on the poll will be chosen by how many likes they get after the contest closes on the 22nd.

If we have to use this to chose photos, any likes a photo gets before the closing of the contest will have to be deleted for fairness to all entries being chosen for the final judging. So, I ask you to try not to give likes to any photo until after the closing on the 22nd. I know, this will be hard for me to not do also.

The poll will run for one week and will close on the 29th of July, unless otherwise noted.

I will announce the winner of the contest on the 31st of July. And I will contact the winner by pm to discuss the prize details with them.

The winner of this contest gets to choose the subject of the Aug. photo contest.

We are going to try to make this a monthly fun thing for all of us to get involved in. So, we are asking for volunteers to take a month and donate a prize to the winner. It is all right if you don't make crafts. The prize does not have to be handmade. Just think about something to give that you think another bird lover like yourself would enjoy getting for a job well done in photographing their favorite flock member!

So, let the contest begin!!!!

Ok, this is Amigo's wing shot, I'm hoping it isn't included in the endangering category.

If you think so, I will come up with something else?

Turquoise

Mare, since we all know that Amigo is an expert at free flight I personally do not feel this would be considered endangering his life. Others may feel differently and I welcome anyone's opinion expressed here about it. I mainly meant something on the line of purposely putting your bird in danger to get a good shot or using props that could harm your birds.

Beautiful first entry I might add! Thank your for submitting it here for the contest. :th_biggrin:

Oh, wow. These are beautiful. If we can do wild birds too, I have to go look at my photos and find the one of a cardinal in flight. It's not a parrot so would it be able to be used for this contest??

Ok, not sure if it is acceptable for the contest, but here is a cardinal coming in for a landing on the bird feeder.

Awesome photo of a cardinal Debra.:th_biggrin: I didn't specify the photos had to be of parrots or of personal parrots owned by the OP. So I say yes the photo you have submitted is definitely allowed.

In future contests if the person choosing the subject matter has a specific type or species of critter they want to see, be sure you include that info with the subject title. I'm thinking down the line photos of just parrots or birds will get old and we can venture out to other animals we like or keep. Maybe even a month of favorite animal/bird short videos.

As long as we get plenty of interest and photos along with sponsors for each month, we will continue these contests. So everyone join in & participate! You never know what you may have in old photos you have forgotten you took. New photos are very welcome also!

Since I'm sponsoring this first contest I can't enter it. So, I wanted to show ya'll 2 wing shots I have taken of Roscoe, 1 my hubby took & 1 wing shot of Leyla Belle. I have lots of wing shots of Roscoe. He loves to spread his wings, he is a big show off. All of the shots are just the luck of the shot, I truly have no idea how to use a camera like it should be used.

Terri, with 12 birdies surely one will pose fro you for this contest. :th_LOL: At least everyone is having fun with this~~I hope!!:th_hug8:

Thanks Mare & Steve for the nice compliments on my wing shots. They were accidental, not planned at all. The camera just clicked at the right time. And I don't think I would be the winner if I were to be in it. There are already really great shots entered that would rival mine any day!

Wendy, that's a great wing shot of Codie. You & he did good! Thanks De'Andrea. It was so hard to take as he just would not keep still:( As soon as he spread his wings, I had to take it with my other hand, which is why it has come out a bit blurred.

Beauiful shot of Pearl Terri! Thanks for sharing with us. :th_hug8:

Steve they are called Goffin here. I looked it up and they are sometimes called Tanimbar Cockatoos and are native to the Tenimber Islands of Indonesia. Their scientific name is Cacatua goffini. It said the Muluccan Cockatoos are also native to the Indonesian Islands. I should look things up more often. I always thought all cockatoos came from Australia.

Everyone that hasn't submitted a photo for our contest, lets get going. You have 13 more days left to get your entry in.

All the submitted entries we have gotten are great & we want to see everyone's beautiful birds on here. If you can't get a full wing shot, don't worry. Any shot that shows their wings in it with any little bit of extension will be accepted. You may have a winning photo in your albums already! Get it on here you never know.

Remember, the winning photo will be decided by a poll vote from members. So,every photo submitted has a chance to win. :th_biggrin:

I apologize to everyone for picking such a hard subject to photograph. I guess that is why we have not had a big turnout in this. Thankfully I won't be picking out or sponsoring the future subjects for the contests. I am not very good at this & it was my first one to think up or sponsor. Hopefully the next sponsor will do a much better job of putting on a photo contest for ya'll.

Great shot of your darling Reggie, Jessica! He is adorable and a cutie!

Equally great shot of your darling Sparky, Elizabeth! Very nice photos everyone. I am so glad I don't have to decide who will win as I would be picking all of them for sure!

We still need someone to volunteer to sponsor the prize for the Aug photo contest. If anyone wants to know more about it, you can pm me & I will be glad to discuss it with you.:th_biggrin:

D'Andrea,
Its great to have an interesting subject. We took a bunch of pics to find one that was really good, both my husband and I worked on it which was fun and Sparky got gobs of treats. Overall that is what makes a contest interesting for everyone involved. I love the idea, but was glad Sparky already had the wing thing figured out!

Well folks you still have 10 more days to get your entry photo in for this month's contest! We already have 9 very awesome photos to choose from. Lets see if we can make it to 15.:th_biggrin:

We have a sponsor for the Aug photo contest. Shelly has volunteered to donate the prize for Aug. Thank you very much Shelly.:th_hug8: We look forward to seeing what you will be offering!

We also have a sponsor for the Sept photo contest. Amanda has volunteered to donate the prize for Sept. thank you very much Amanda. :th_hug8: I know what Amanda is offering, but I will not reveal it yet. Lets build up a little suspense and anticipation and get everyone geared for our next two contests.

So we know we will be having the next two months covered & the contests will continue.:th_yah: I can't wait to see what the subject/themes will be for the future contests!

Anyone who would like to line up a future month, let me or Wendy know and we will put you down for that month as a sponsor for the prize. Should anyone volunteer a prize for a future month & then have a reason they will not be able to donate that month, just let us know at least two weeks before that coming month so we can line up another donation.

There is still time to get a few good shots & toss them into the ring. It could be the ultimate winner in the making. You gotta' try to win!! I'd love to see a few more photos on here from our new members. Don't be shy, jump right in & get your feathered kids shining hour up in contest lights!!:th_cheer:

I had a couple of future photo contest ideas suggested to me by Terri (Pinkbirdy) and they are very good ideas. I wanted to share them on here in case the winner of this contest needs a little help in thinking up a subject/theme for our Aug contest. Remember the winner of each future contest gets to choose the next month's photo contest subject/theme. So here are Terri's ideas:

1. Favorite Photo~~Why it is and tell a story about your reason for choosing it.

2. Your Parrot hanging out with a friend or family member.

Thank you Terri for helping out with these suggestions.:th_hug8: And if any of ya'll have ideas you'd like to add just post them here and I will keep a list of them in case a future winner is stumped about what to choose for a photo contest theme. :smiley-bird-emotico

A workaround for tapatalk users to be able to access this thread's poll portion is as follows. In tapatalk, browse to the July Photo Contest thread. From there hit your phone's menu button and look for the "Web View" option. If you don't see it, click on "More" and it should appear in a sub-menu. Once you click on "Web View" it should load the July Photo Contest thread within your phone's preferred browser. At this point you will be able to see the poll near the top above the messages. You will, however, need to log in to the site from your browser instance in order to vote in the poll.

The above procedure works on my android phone. The process should be similar on an iPhone. I hope this may be helpful to some of you. If you find that it's too much of an inconvenience, the blame goes to tapatalk for failing to include poll thread functionality.
